This morning, I had the pleasure of attending a press breakfast at High Point Market featuring keynote speaker Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, whom we’ve featured several times on the site for his decor work, fabulous role on Million Dollar Decorators , and new book Live, Love & Decorate . This morning, Martyn told some fantastic decorating stories about some of his celebrity clients, including Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, and Kid Rock . Curious about the inner decorating lives of Martyn’s star clientele? Here were some of my favorite stories. Cheryl Tiegs’s ’50s bungalow had eight-feet-tall ceilings until Martyn transformed them into sweeping 26-feet-tall ceilings. Cheryl Tiegs’s fireplace is actually made from architectural salvage from a New York building – complete with gargoyles . Martyn noted that if Cher wasn’t an actress, she’d be an interior designer. Cher’s design directive for Martyn when designing her apartment was the following: “I want to be the first wife of the maharaja.” Martyn described client Joe Francis’s business as “unusual.” (Joe is the man behind the Girls Gone Wild videos.) When decorating Joe Francis’s home in Mexico, a truck full of furniture was “kidnapped” and held for ransom, and Martyn had to bring a suitcase full of money to recover it. Hazardcheck is a new initiative by Health Canada to help spread the word about home safety from common indoor pollutants. The Hazardcheck campaign aims to provide Canadians with information on how to make their homes a safe and healthy environment. Starting tomorrow, we’ll be featuring weekly articles from Health Canada on the Home Renovation Guide blog to help do our part in providing people with important information on how to protect the health and well-being of their homes and families. As “Canadians spend over 90% of their time indoors” and “children come into closer contact with the hazards in their environment than adults” it’s important for us to all know about the potential health impacts of common health hazards we all have a chance to come into contact on a regular basis. These common harmful elements are: mould, lead, radon, carbon monoxide, household chemical products and second-hand smoke. As well as a online resource for families – a new section of the Health Canada website has been designed that includes informative articles and videos – there will also be live Hazardcheck events this fall being held at 121 Home Depot stores across Canada. Checklists will be on hand that outline simple steps to ensure your home’s health. There will also be representatives at these events who can answer your questions. You will also be able to get rebates from Home Depot on featured home safety products such as: carbon monoxide monitors and radon test kits. Keep an eye on the dates:  October 29th to the 30th and November 5th and 6th for events in your neighbourhood.

Ensure Your Home is a Healthy Environment

Matthew Hofmann (of Hofmann Architecture ), a 28-year-old Central California Coast-based architect, is the master craftsman who’s turning back the clock. This is his second high-design Airstream project to be released this year. Can you remember the first Airstream remodel ? According to the official project description we received, “for this design Hofmann found four feet of linear counter-height deck space for a built-in desk, mid-level chair and three drawers situated between the bathroom and kitchen. A view of the Pacific Ocean is framed in a window that can be seen while sitting at the built-in desk. A centrally-located hi-def 19-inch video monitor displays either DVDs or streamed Netflix videos from anywhere in the trailer. A surround sound audio system provides more than enough sound support. The monitor swivels on a pullout arm for optimal viewing adjustments and tucks away neatly behind a rollup cabinet. A high-design brushed stainless steel sink and faucet sits on an elegantly curved deck that faces another nifty addition – a see-through fish tank that’s visible from the office and bathroom, with only the fish seeing what’s on each side. The Cali Bamboo flooring is a nice sustainable feature. The backlit ceiling lights emit a soft glow against the brilliant white surfaces. Three LED puck lights over the kitchen/office stubbornly keep electric usage down and specific task lighting cranked up.  The dining area has been expanded to seat six comfortably at the table, with the addition of two fold-away chairs that adjoin the kitchen area. Underneath the left and right access benches are two “carry-on luggage-sized drawers,” as Hofmann calls them. “They’re for guests to store their travel bags.” The drawer guides, as are all installed drawers, constructed with silent closing Hafele German-crafted hardware that’s sturdy enough for 50 lbs. of gear.” Freshome readers, how do you appreciate the functionality and design of this project? Last night on the premiere of Design Star , the contestants were challenged to make over their penthouse rooms. There were definitely highlights in each room, but I was most impressed by Kellie and Karl’s bonus room, which showed the designers’ innovative use of odd spaces and ability to create custom focal points on a small budget. I especially loved Karl’s tree mural wall, which he painted in two beautiful blues. The designers’ use of contrasting yellow in the furniture and accents really made the wall pop. Karl created this wall by using blue painter’s tape – definitely an economical way to make a major impact in a space. You could easily do the same on a wall in your home. Just make sure to firmly press down the tape’s edges to create a crisp line. Have you tried to do a similar mural with tape? How did it turn out? Did you miss last night’s episode?
