Sustainability has been THE buzz word of the past few years and manufacturers have been under increasing pressure to reduce the carbon footprint of the products that they bring to market. Using recycled materials is one way that they have sought to do this. But one company has taken this in a very unexpected direction by producing a kitchen made from recycled, eco-friendly paper. Italian kitchen manufacturer Key Cucine has used PaperStone , an innovative new material composed of recycled paper fiber and non-petroleum-based resins to create the Eco kitchen designed by Alessio Bassan . The original design features a checkerboard modular surface in four different shades suspended on a recessed base. Meticulous attention has been paid to details, such as the PaperStone sink with sunken taps and the board, which provides extra preparation space. Elegantly imposing, this contemporary home employs the traditional Asian concept of multi-generation living in a modern residential structure. Singapore-based studio Formwerkz Architects imagined a house that would care for different needs of each inhabitant and unify the family in a set of common spaces. The three story Apartment House project in Singapore is not only a family fortress, but also an adaptable dwelling that can easily be expanded or changed, according to each generation’s needs. Even the scale of this residential unit hits towards its function – a residence prepared to construct a new lifestyle for the many members of the family: “ The house is organized in two linear volumes, split by a common pool in the middle but connected on the upper floors by the family space. The 2-storey volume houses the parents’ master en-suite on the upper floors, floating above the main living space. A lawn garden sits above on the roof. The Elwood House was designed by Jost Architects and displays an interesting mix of volumes, each functionally distinct. With a total living area of 430 square meters, the residence serves the needs of a family in Milton St, Elwood, Victoria, Australia. According to the architects, “ the client wanted a house that was clean, distinctive and enjoyable to use without feeling like they were an object in their own home purely because it was of a contemporary design ”. Visually and structurally, the residence consists of two levels, the bottom one giving the impression “ that a block has been carved and hollowed revealing areas of the interior from different external views which in turn create views of the surrounding area “. As part of our Styled by You $500 Giveaway with IKEA , Angela and I have been applying simple techniques to reenvision some of our favorite IKEA products. Today, I’m sharing another of my projects. This BEKVAM stool ($15) from IKEA is made from solid wood and is very sturdy. However, it could definitely use a little personalization. I thought it would be fun to add some glossy color to the stool. See what I did to refresh the look of this sturdy BEKVAM stool.

A monolithic residential structure named Buenos Mares Villa rises from the sloping terrain of this resort village in Uruguay. Stonework and wood envelope the building designed by RDR Arquitectos and were also used to create the stunning interiors. Light curtains hint towards the slightly visible separation line between the indoors and outdoors. While the night sets in, the main living space becomes comfortable and almost secluded, overlooking the southern coast of Uruguay. An infinity pool on the edge of the stone terrace steals the attention away from the thick white overhangs shaping a covered terrace guarded by a tree and guiding footsteps towards a sunny courtyard. Lower levels were reserved for social zones, while the upper volume concentrates the views on large stretches of water. Bunk beds in the children’s room display wood elements that link the entire interior design, while the master bedroom delights parents with a light and breezy space composition. Uncomplicated in design and following the contours of the land, this textured residential structure compliments the surroundings and borrows views to filter through sliding doors and large dark framed windows. A terrace surrounded by the green roof on the main bedroom’s level offers still moments, when inhabitant, house and nature meet in a part man-made, part natural setting. A few days ago Cecconi Simone sent us images about their latest project. Cecconi Simone has designed the model for a community of thirty-seven contemporary townhouses by Treasure Hill Developments in Little Italy / Little Portugal, Downtown Toronto. Here are a few words about this project according to Cecconi Simone : “ The 662 s.f. show suite is a careful study in urban living, its manifest simplicity belying its essential complexity. It embodies the modern impulse for openness, unity, and fluidity, within which functional parts are accommodated effortlessly. The character of the different zones is easy to read though their interrelationship is dense and multi-faceted. Three distinct yet continuous areas – dine-cook-live – are defined clearly within the spatial totality, linked by an interplay of surface planes in cadence; horizontal and vertical, matte and reflective, transparent and opaque, dark and light. Deep espresso, custom millwork contracts the space, creating intimacy and warmth, while the white lacquer, custom kitchen island provides visual expansion and release. The oak stair on a single stringer behind floor-to-ceiling plate glass is highlighted with LEDs, imbuing it with complexity and dimensional depth. As part of the overall design discourse, there are few freestanding or decorative furnishings within the suite. The integrity of its interior architecture stands on its own, enlivened with carefully-calibrated artificial and natural light. Sliding veneer panels – for concealed storage, media, and food preparation – maintain the model’s architectonic focus, ensuring clear and extended sight lines.
